Unhappy Sheffield United fans set Christmas challenge after Chris Wilder's honest improvement admission

Chris Wilder has urged Sheffield United supporters to reserve final judgement of his side until around Christmas time, amid mounting concern about their season. The Blades went into the international break on the back of their fourth defeat in five games.

Question marks about players and manager are growing after United dropped to 18th in the Championship table. There is context to their early-season struggle, with Wilder having been robbed of his three most creative players in the transfer market.

Off-field issues have also cast a shadow over Bramall Lane and impacted the mood around the club, with frustration boiling over into matchdays. Some fans chanted about backwards and sideways passing in the away end at Stoke City, although others hit back at ironic songs about having a shot in the 2-1 defeat.

The underlying data on United’s season start shows they are not creating enough at one end of the pitch and conceding too many shots on their own goal at the other. And Wilder does not dispute that there are areas which need to improve.

But he believes the context of a summer of considerable change is being overlooked, with United still trying to replace several important players while new arrivals settle into the team.

United paid “quite a lot of money” to a data company to conduct a review into last season, and it found that their statistics should have put them in the play-offs come the end of the season. And that is after effectively handing the rest of the division a seven-game head start.

That is history now, of course, but it feeds a wider point about the danger of drawing conclusions of a season before it has properly taken shape. "We're a seventh of the season in," said Wilder.

"We’re not halfway, it's not three quarters. Would I like our stats to improve? Yeah, 100 per cent. In and out of possession, we need to be better. We understand that.

“But we're a seventh of the season in, and people are making assumptions about how we're going to be.

"That is the world that we live in. I totally get that. But we’re on nine points. We didn’t get to double figures until November 8 last year. I’m looking at Hull City, sat in the Premier League. Are they really bothered about xG at the moment?

“I'm not saying we are the completed article but I don't think anybody is. Have an opinion now, I get it. But judge the team at Christmas time, both statistically and points-wise.”

United will look to make the most of every minute of the current international break before attacking the next run of games, and their squad could have a very different look about it when they return to action against Lincoln City on October 10.

Femi Seriki and Harrison Burrows are still to return, offering United a different dimension in the back-three shape they have played recently, while Ryan One and Tahith Chong, a welcome returnee to the squad at Stoke after injury, will also lighten the load on Ben Brereton Diaz and Romelle Donovan.
