Joe Lumley absence length revealed as Sheffield Wednesday hail thumping of AFC Wimbledon
Sheffield Wednesday hammered AFC Wimbledon 5-0 on Saturday - without their frontline goalkeeper.
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Lumley will sit out their upcoming fixture flurry - with the Owls having thrashed AFC Wimbledon to go within a couple of points of the top of League One.
Three goals within seven minutes at the end of the first half put Wednesday in dominance, with goals for Barry Bannan, Harry Gray, Callum Slattery and a double for string-puller Davis Keillor-Dunn completing a rout that saw the Owls thunder 25 shots on goal in a one-sided affair. The result followed a week in which Wednesday were questioned for a flat first half performance in drawing at Huddersfield Town and set them up nicely heading into back-to-back double game weeks.
“I'm really pleased and really proud to see how the training came to the pitch today,” Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star post-match. “I'm really proud of the mentality we had from the first moment. We spoke a lot this week about how we can start a game like we finished in Huddersfield. I think how we start the game through our pressing, through our quick transition, but also through our offensive mindset.
“When we had the ball, we had so many deep runs, we had so many balls behind. The first 25 minutes was really, really strong. Then we had eight, nine minutes, or maybe ten, where we ran after the ball, but we were solid and didn't create anything.
“Then we came back again at the end of the first half. Then how we played in the second half, I think it was very controlled. As I said to the boys, after 4-0 and 5-0, the hunger to keep up the intensity, the hunger to keep up the discipline, the hunger to finish this game strong, it was amazing.”
Wednesday were without Lumley for the clash after he picked up a rib issue late on in the Huddersfield comeback effort. Deputy stopper Ashley Maynard-Brewer stepped up in his absence as the Owls collected their third home clean sheet on the spin - and the Australian will keep his place heading to Notts County and beyond as Lumley recovers from the niggle.
“I think we're speaking two to three weeks, but let's see how quick it will go,” Pedersen said on the injury. “I think Ashley played a strong, strong game today. He was defensively very strong and offensively he was solid.”
