Uncertainty surrounds Lundstram’s future at Bramall Lane after talks, aimed at extending his present contract, stalled last season.

With the impasse showing no sign of being broken, the Glaswegians are considering launching what has been described as an “audacious” bid to lure the 26-year-old north of the border. But they will fear that could tempt United to resurrect their interest in Kamara - the Finland international, who was being monitored by Chris Wilder midway through last term.

With Scottish football’s precarious financial situation meaning Rangers are unlikely to be able to outbid teams from England’s top-flight, United officials would be prepared to use Kamara as a lever if their manager instructs them to use the former Arsenal youngster as a makeweight.

Wilder, who is also tracking Reading’s John Swift and Matty Cash of Nottingham Forest after capturing AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale earlier this week, is known to have kept tabs on Kamara’s situation during the January transfer window amid speculation he is eyeing a return to England three years after leaving the Emirates Stadium.

Previously of Dundee, Kamara has started all four of Rangers’ league outings this season and has also attracted admiring glances from the likes of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Italian champions Juventus also sent scouts to watch him in action before Maurizio Sarri’s departure following their exit from the Champions League.
