The truth behind John Lundstram's contract situation at Sheffield United is revealed

John Lundstram will remain a Sheffield United player beyond the end of this season, manager Chris Wilder has confirmed, after revealing the midfielder’s contract contains a clause entitling the club to extend it by a further 12 months.

Lundstram opened talks about a new deal towards the end of last year, after emerging as a driving force behind the club’s success in the Premier Leaguec following promotion from the Championship.

Although it was previously thought Lundstram would become a free agent this summer if those negotiations were not concluded by the end of the season, Wilder told The Star the agreement United negotiated with the player following his move from Oxford in 2017 means that is not the case.

“There’s an extension in it,” he said. “And we will definitely be taking that up.”

“It’s something we can do and yes, it’s something we will be exercising.

“So basically, even if this wasn’t happening, John wouldn’t become available) in the summer.

“We can do that.”

Lundstram, aged 25, is expected to make his 22nd appearance of the season at Arsenal this weekend after featuring in all but one of United’s top-flight outings since their promotion last term.

Together with defenders Enda Stevens and John Egan, he was recently invited to prolong his stay at Bramall Lane after impressing Wilder and his coaching staff. John Fleck has also been informed that United plan to open discussions with his representative shortly, although those talks have not progressed beyond the preliminary stage.

Despite acknowledging he would be surprised if Egan, Stevens and Lundstram put pen to paper before the end of the transfer window, Wilder said: “I’m relaxed about the situation. Very relaxed.

“I’ve not had any indication from John that he wants to leave, far from it. And we want him to stay, the same with the other lads.”

“It’s difficult to get players to sign contracts in January,” Wilder, who committed his own future to United before last week’s win over West Ham, added. “I should imagine there will be more talks in February when the transfer window has closed.

“I’m relaxed about it. This is a good football club.

“My deal does give stability to things. They have to make the decision and look after their careers.

“I’ve always said that players should take more ownership of their careers at times. But I’ve got no problems with agents or anything like that.”
