The huge hurdle holding back contract offers for Sheffield United key men

Sheffield United are not in position to make contract offers to any of those players who could become free agents at the end of the season until the club’s ownership situation is resolved, it was confirmed last night.

Sixteen players are scheduled to depart Bramall Lane this summer, either after becoming free agents or after completing their loans, although a large portion of those agreements contain potential extension clauses.

But with Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in talks with an as yet unnamed investor or investors about relinquishing control of United, manager Paul Heckingbottom admitted that he is unable to try and address the situation at present.

Despite indicating that most of those approaching the end of their present deals want to stay in South Yorkshire, Heckingbottom acknowledged it is vital the situation is “sorted out” as quickly as possible.

“We’re not in that position, no (to get things done),” he told The Star. “One hundred percent it’s important it gets resolved. You want as much control over things as possible.

“At the moment, we don’t know what is going to happen (with the possible takeover). So we just have to look after ourselves. We just have to focus on winning games.”

“I know how much these players care about the club,” Heckingbottom added. “And I know how much they want to be here.”

Second in the Championship table and nine points clear of third place following Monday’s draw at Queens Park Rangers, United begin their latest FA Cup campaign with a third round tie against Millwall tomorrow. Speaking ahead of the visit to south London, Heckingbottom confirmed he is searching for a replacement for Reda Khadra after the Germany under-21 international, on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, asked to leave following a frustrating start to his career with United. Insisting he is only minded to grant Khadra’s wish providing his slot in the squad is filled by an in-coming signing, Heckingbottom’s attempts to source an alternative option are also being complicated by the uncertainty at boardroom level.

“It sounds harsh but every single day these lads are getting judged,” Heckingbottom explained, revealing his decision to recall Will Osula from Derby County was “partly” influenced by the anticipated loss of Khadra. “When you stop playing, unless you are doing what I’m doing, then that’s the bit you miss. That’s why these lads have got to take care of themselves and why they’ve got a reason to keep doing what they’re doing, which I know they always will. Because the better we are doing on the pitch, then the better it is for everyone.”

Iliman Ndiaye, Sander Berge, John Egan and John Fleck are among those being linked with rival teams during this month’s transfer window. Ndiaye is likely to be in particular demand, having announced himself to a global audience after impressing for Senegal at the recent World Cup in Qatar.

The youngster is tied to United until 2024 but Heckingbottom has made no secret of his desire to keep “the group” together as he chases a place in the Premier League next term.

“I’m not aware of any interest,” he said, “In any of our players.”
