The crucial decision Sheffield United stars are set to make

The Professional Footballers’ Association has been asked to provide its thoughts on the feasibility of a return to action next month, after competition officials, senior politicians and government health advisors began drafting measures which could see fixtures resume next month following a 12 week hiatus.

PL shareholders have been asked to canvas opinions among their respective squads over the coming days, with Simon Moore, United’s PFA delegate, expected to liaise between the dressing room and Bramall Lane’s hierarchy.

The response of union members will go a long way towards deciding the fate of the scheme, which was discussed by England’s leading 20 clubs again last week, given that a resounding ‘no’ would almost certainly force the PL to abandon its proposal.

A number of Moore’s team mates have already voiced their desire to fulfil United’s remaining 10 top-flight fixtures, with manager Chris Wilder himself also in favour.

Seventh in the table and preparing for an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal when the shutdown was announced, United’s record signing Sander Berge recently revealed he “hopes” the 2019/20 calendar is completed while defender George Baldock is ready to enter quarantine in a hotel if it means matches can be played.

But others within the game, including Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, have expressed fears about the situation.

The Argentine striker claimed “most” of his fellow professionals are “scared” by the prospect of competing in June, meaning it is impossible to predict how the discussions will unfold.

Moore, the former Brentford and Cardiff City goalkeeper, performed a crucial role in helping to negotiate the salary and bonus deferrals those under Wilder’s command agreed last month in order to help United cope with the financial difficulties the pandemic has caused.

Captain Billy Sharp is also likely to help Moore gauge the feelings of his colleagues, after United announced a partial return to training.
