Steve Bruce has his say on John Egan's red card on a day to forget for Sheffield United at Newcastle United

Steve Bruce, the Newcastle United manager, admitted he has some sympathy for Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder after John Egan's sending off at St James' Park this afternoon.

The Republic of Ireland defender was sent off for a second booking after tangling with Newcastle striker Joelinton. Egan had earlier been booked after exchanging words with the Brazilian striker.

Newcastle went on to win the game 3-0, with £40m striker Joelinton scoring his first goal in the league since August.

"(The first yellow) was a little bit (of) handbags," Bruce said.

"I don't think either of them deserved a yellow card but I can understand how Chris must feel.

"The second one was a yellow, it could have been a red maybe. The big decisions in big games, you need them to go for you."

On Joelinton, Bruce added: "He has still got a lot to do but a £40million price tag is a lot on him."
