Chris Wilder’s men suffered their heaviest defeat of the campaign as they were swept aside by three second half goals from the lively Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Ritchie and Joelinton.

To compound the Blades’ misery, defender John Egan was sent off for a second bookable offence shortly after half-time for a foul on Joelinton when the score was 0-0.

It means United stay in seventh place and are four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who could widen the gap with victory over struggling Aston Villa this afternoon.

Unsurprisingly, the defeat and performance left United supporters far from impressed.

Here’s what some fans have had to say on Twitter.

@azzle94 Bash aside, we were dreadful today. Worst performance of the season, worst performance in three seasons. Norwood, Stevens, Baldock, Sharp, McBurnie have had shockers. I am dreading Man Utd on Wednesday. No Egan, O’Connell and Henderson and in shocking form. Very poor #SUFC #twitterblades

@TomBlade1889 A well-drilled system and high work rate has got us this far. When we don't play well as a team and the intensity isn't there we are doomed because we have very few technically gifted players who could create something out of nothing when it's needed. #sufc #twitterblades

@Trev_Allison We miss the crowd and the intensity it brings, we thrive on blood and thunder football and these crowd-less training games are affecting us 100%! No excuse though we've been s**t since the return #sufc #twitterblades

@WillyRoberts We looked weak, disjointed and full of errors. Things that haven’t been in our game this season. Glad we’re already safe!! #sufc #twitterblades #NEWSHU

@SBatts79 Well the less said about that the better!! Individually and collectively poor today, errors all over the place. Every Newcastle goal we had possession and gave it away, terrible. Two worrying performances for me, just not looked at the races in either. #SUFC #Twitterblades

@SUFCmatt Norwood not himself, Stevens not himself, sluggish football, poor passing has cost us points. Red card didn't help but we've had a great season no matter what now but the past two games have been pretty poor and I refuse to believe otherwise #sufc #twitterblades

@Nick_Athorn Shocking performance, not one player can say they put a shift in. Most anti United performance I’ve seen us play. Wouldn’t want to be in that changing room with Wilder #SUFC #twitterblades

@CallumCheswick Would love to be a fly on the wall in that dressing room... #sufc #twitterblades

@TuftyBall That's the worst we've ever played under Wilder, and he should catch some well deserved criticism for that result. It's still tight in the race for Europe, but we look way off the pace and I think we'll drop down the table from this point. #SUFC #TwitterBlades

@LWad2000 Dreadful performance but no need to overreact, let the players put it right over the next games #sufc #twitterblades

@deaksofficial Wilder will be furious. The players need to have a look themselves. Basham should be throwing hands at his teammates. #sufc #twitterblades

@ryanhobson7 One thing is for sure, after that, Wilder will be stepping in and not leaving it to the dressing room to sort out. That was awful. #sufc #twitterblades

@DavidMckenzie89 Basham the only one to come away with any credit. That was dreadful, so many basic errors and individual mistakes. Up against it without Egan, JoC and Deano for Man Utd! #sufc #twitterblades

@KatherineRoot I'm gonna forget that even happened!!! Worst performance ever under Chris! Thankfully we've got an easy game on Wednesda
