Sheffield United’s Rabbi Matondo transfer decision confirmed as decisive update ends speculation after absence

Sheffield United’s decision over the future of Rabbi Matondo has been confirmed via a decisive update from boss Chris Wilder. Danny Hall reports from Germany

Chris Wilder was tight lipped about Sheffield United’s decision to “move on” from former Rangers man Rabbi Matondo, after confirming his hopes of earning a move to Bramall Lane were over. The Welsh international trained with United in pre-season and played three friendly games.

He was a notable absentee from the United party that travelled to Bochum for yesterday’s friendly, which completed an unbeaten warm-up campaign for Wilder’s men. They drew 0-0 with Uwe Rosler’s side in front of around 2,000 Blades fans.

While that suggested strongly that his time at United had come to an end, there remained the possibility that he had missed out due to injury or while United negotiated a deal with his current club Brann.

But Wilder confirmed that United had “moved on” from the prospect of signing the winger, who had originally been seen as a wildcard prospect amid the Blades’ search for left-wing options.

“Yeah, we're not proceeding with Rabbi,” Wilder told The Star in Germany. ”So we've sort of moved on, and we wish him luck for the future.”

Asked if the decision was due to fitness, budgets or something else, Wilder replied: “No, we're just not proceeding with it.”
