The competition’s chief medical advisor, Mark Gillett, confirmed discussions about the matter will take place over the next few weeks with a number of parties, including government health experts, set to take part in the talks.

Speaking earlier this month, United defender George Baldock insisted it would be a price worth paying in order to complete a campaign which had seen Chris Wilder’s squad climb to seventh before the English game was placed into lockdown.

But his view is not likely to be shared by all, despite Wilder’s insistence that every player at his disposal is ready to return to action.
