Affordable flats to replace once loved former Sheffield pub

Council orders developer to include extra parking after concerns raised

Plans have been approved which will see a block of flats built on the site of a once loved Sheffield pub.

The Shiregreen Arms has been closed for 12 years and demolition had already been approved - but now Sheffield Council has approved planning permission which will see 21 social housing flats built in a three-storey block on the site.

It was approved despite concerns being raised that the development may cause parking problems, but officials have added a condition that no one can move in until there are 15 parking spaces created there, and insisting that those parking spaces are not removed.

Originally, only 12 had been planned.

A report states: “To ensure satisfactory parking provision in the interests of traffic safety and the amenities of the locality it is essential for these works to have been carried out before the use commences.”

Sanctuary Housing Association Ltd is looking to build the flats on Mason Lathe Road, Shiregreen.

The block would contain 16 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom flats, available for rent to people aged 55 and over.

South Yorkshire Police said that the vacant, derelict site had historically suffered from ongoing crime, arson, and anti-social behaviour.

The force added in a letter to the council: “Regenerating this plot will revitalise the area visually, make good use of the land, and provide affordable housing. “

Firefighters have been sent to the site on occasions to deal with incidents.

Shiregreen and Brightside ward councillor Dawn Dale has backed the plans.

She said: “As one of the local elected members I am in full support of this application, it will bring much-needed housing to the area and improve the space.”

The pub had also previously been known at The Penguin.
