The 52-year-old had led the Blades to seventh place – just two points behind Manchester United in fifth – when the season was halted on Friday due to the coronavirus outbreak. But what about his predecessors in the 21st century? How do they compare against the record of arguably United’s greatest ever manager?

5. John Carver (caretaker manager), December 2010
Carver was appointed as caretaker manager after the departure of Gary Speed but left the club when Micky Adams was appointed United's boss. He won one of his three games in charge. Photo: Ian MacNicol
6. Micky Adams, December 2010 to May 2011
Adams, like Wilder and Warnock, is a boyhood Blade but his spell at the Lane was no happy return for him. He lasted just under six months as United were relegated to League One, just three seasons after their Premier League adventure. He won just four of his 24 games with a 16.67 per cent win percentage. 7. Danny Wilson, May 2011 to April 2013
Former Wednesday player and boss Wilson's appointment was greeted with hostility by some of the United faithful. In his first season in charge his side scored 92 league goals and accumulated 90 points, but could only finish third before the team lost on penalties in the League One play-off final against Huddersfield Town. The following season included a 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions but six months later he left the club following a poor run. Wilson had an impressive win percentage of 51.89 having won 55 of 106 games. Photo: Matthew Lewis
8. Chris Morgan (caretaker manager) April to June 2013, October 2013
Ex-Bladesman Morgan had two short stints in charge as caretaker boss. In his first spell after the departure of Wilson, his United side were beaten in the League One semi-finals by Yeovil Town. His second stint came following the dismissal of David Weir in October 2013, but he was replaced when Nigel Clough came to the club. Photo: Matt Cardy
