Sheffield United's hunch about Enda Stevens

Sheffield United suspected Enda Stevens would struggle to complete his first game since recovering from a muscle injury, manager Chris Wilder has conceded, because of the challenges of playing on a hybrid pitch.

The surface - a combination of natural grass and artificial fibres - cost £1m when it was installed at Bramall Lane five years ago, after Wilder’s predecessor Nigel Clough petitioned the board before his contract was terminated in 2015.

Stevens, who missed last week’s FA Cup win over Reading after being diagnosed with a calf complaint, started Saturday’s Premier League fixture with Norwich City but was withdrawn during the second-half after complaining of discomfort.

Although Wilder praised the quality of the pitch, he acknowledged it can pose a challenge for people in Stevens’ situation.

Speaking after Billy Sharp’s fourth goal of the season propelled United to a 1-0 win, he said: “Enda has a tight calf, it was just a precaution. The Desso pitch has been brilliant but it can be quite firm.

“He just felt a bit tight. He’s not pulled anything.”

Stevens, who was replaced by Ben Osborn, is scheduled to undergo another round of physiotherapy at the Steelphalt Academy this week as United attempt to ensure the Republic of Ireland international is fit for their visit to Newcastle.

“He’s not out two to four weeks,” Wilder said. “We’re not talking about a grade one, two or whatever else the physio’s language is, or anything like that.

“He just told us it felt tight and I thought Ben did great."
