Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder doubles down on transfer policy with Middlesbrough and Coventry City cited

United boss Wilder praises returning Blades and insists Championship experience is crucial

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has spoken about the importance of experienced Championship players ahead of United’s trip to Portsmouth on Wednesday night.

After this summer’s transfer window, some fans were concerned that the club was stuck in the past rather than looking to bring fresh talent to Bramall Lane.

United brought back former Blades Ben Brereton Diaz (on loan) and Hamza Choudhury from Southampton and Leicester City, respectively.

The United gaffer insisted that he must find a balance of young players and experienced Championship players in order to reach success.

“(I want) players that know what they're coming into, and me understanding what I'm getting as well,” Wilder said.

“I think when you look at especially the teams that have had the parachute payments that have been in the division for quite a number of years that have managed to get out of the division or trying to, you look at Middlesbrough and you've got your Luke Aylings, you've got your Matt Grimes at Coventry played a lot of games in the Championship.

“So you have to have players that know the Championship.”

After admitting that Fratton Park can provide an ‘intimidating’ atmosphere, Wilder is looking for players that can cope with that environment.

“You have to have players that know what going to Fratton Park on a Wednesday night is all about and then going to Bristol City, so I'm never turning down opportunities to sign good players, but you have to have that balance and mix,” he said.

United’s manager praised the two returning Blades for their performances against Lincoln City at the weekend.

“The two that I've brought back, I thought were good on Saturday and will be good for us, and this part of the journey with Ben and Hamza not waiting six months to get going, understand the league, me, the coaches, what is needed to play for Sheffield United,” he added.

“The biggest thing was I can't wait five, six, seven months for some players to come to the party; we needed them to come quickly and make an impact.”
