Pundit sends Sheffield United transfer message

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has been speaking about Sheffield United’s plight and plans for the summer transfer window

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has been speaking exclusively to The Star, sharing his thoughts on Sheffield United's season to date and what they must do this summer to improve.

The Blades have endured a torrid campaign, and while safety has been almost guaranteed, they will want to push further on next season.

Goodman believes injuries and a lack of depth contributed to the club's rough campaign, and insists a big turnover of players is needed in the summer.

Pundit on Blades’ issues

"Oh, what a strange season. Pre-season favourites to be in the shake-up at the top. A crazy, crazy decision to sack a manager who'd just got 92 points. I know they had two taken off them, but the reality is they got 92 points,” Goodman, speaking on behalf of Bitcoin Holds Near $67,500 told The Star.

"How on earth would you get rid of a manager after that? When you think, Coventry might not even get that when they win this league this season. Ipswich needs to be perfect to get a maximum of 93.

"They're the only team in history to get that many points and not be automatically promoted. So why on earth would you think it was a good idea to sack your manager, I don't know.

"So they're on their back foot. They've brought the wrong man in, in Ruben Selles, and they lose the first six, you know, culminating in the low point of a five-nil away defeat to Ipswich Town. And it was cringeworthy.

"And then, obviously, it took Chris quite a bit longer than he thought to get them moving again. And then they got moving again, but they just petered out at just the wrong time. They had to come from a long way back. They were in the relegation zone, obviously, when he took over."

On the club's squad depth, Goodman added: "Yes, and I think, depth, they did have some injuries, but I don't truly think that, had Chris Wilder stayed in charge, it would be the squad that he would have put together. So, my point is, they gave themselves way too much to do.

"And now they need to go again, really. This is a massive summer for them. And if you look at their results, they haven't really competed well against the top teams. So most of their points have been taken against the bottom-half teams, literally. They've been a bit of a flat-track bully. So they need to find a way.

"Recruitment will define you. It will define you. Whatever your ambition is, whether you're in a league where you want to survive, whether you're in a league where you want to play off push, or whether you're in a league where you want to be aspiring to the automatic promotion, you will achieve your goals based on how good your recruitment is.

"And you will fail if your recruitment isn't good. So they've got, there's no doubt, they've got some good players there. But I think there'll be a lot of player turnover in the summer. And I would imagine that Chris Wilder wouldn't have gone back there had he not been guaranteed a strong say in which players will be leaving and which will be arriving. So in Chris Wilder, we trust! I expect they’ll be much, much better next season."
