Praise for Sheffield United defender wanted by Portsmouth
Rhys Norrington-Davies has been linked with a move to Portsmouth
Chris Wilder has praised the professionalism of defender Rhys Norrington-Davies as Championship clubs keep a watchful eye on his transfer situation at Bramall Lane.
The left back made a surprise appearance for the Blades in their pre-season match against Bochum in Germany and since then has been around the squad when it had been expect that he would be on his way out of the club.
Injuries have hampered Norrington-Davies’ time at United in recent years but a productive spell at QPR last season in which he made 34 appearances brought the 27 year-old to the attention of other second tier sides.
Portsmouth are one credited with having interest in the Wales international and Wilder admitted that a club has been in touch regarding Norrington-Davies.
The player’s versatility - he can play at centre back as well as left back - means it could be late on in the window before a final decision is made on his immediate future as United look for defensive reinforcements themselves.
“We're not going to weaken our team,” Wilder said on the possibility of Norrington-Davies leaving during this window. “There'll be a lot of decisions over the next week.
“There's been a lot of phone calls for our players as well. We have to make sure that we're protected and we don't leave ourselves light. There's been a phone call on Rhys, but at the moment he's with us. He was on the bench, he came on on Saturday.
“We have to make sure that we protect ourselves and make sure we're not short for good players. Rhys is a good player and he's a top pro as well. He just gets on with his business and understands that he's employed by us at this particular moment and he's involved tomorrow night.”
