Sheffield United reiterate Gus Hamer transfer stance as Coventry City return rumours continue to swirl

Sheffield United’s Gus Hamer transfer stance has been reiterated as rumours of a Coventry City return continue to swirl

Gus Hamer was all smiles at Sheffield United’s training session in Bochum today as speculation continued to swirl in the background about his future at Bramall Lane. The forward has been linked extensively with a return to his former club Coventry City in the last few days.

Suggestions that the deal was done yesterday had jumped the gun somewhat and our latest understanding is that no deal has been agreed between the two clubs, although that can change in an instant in the modern game.

United’s stance with Hamer remains the same as with every other member of Chris Wilder’s squad; there are valuations on their heads and if offers are received that meet them, then a decision will be made.

Hamer’s situation is complicated somewhat in that he is now in the final year of his contract and is yet to agree a new one, despite initial discussions about that prospect taking place with his representatives.

Despite him enjoying a good relationship with Blades fans, the prospect of a return to his former club - from whom he joined the Blades three summers ago - would hold an emotional appeal as well for a player who has not long since turned 29 and is approaching the ‘last big move’ stage of his career.

But United’s dilemma is how to value a player who is capable of Hamer’s magic, offering the sort of game-changing ability that isn’t easily replaced in the transfer market. The fact he could potentially walk away next summer for free, or even agree a pre-contract move abroad in January, is the big elephant in the room.

If Hamer does depart there won’t be many Unitedites who wouldn’t thank him for the memories and wish him well. But at the minute United’s message is unchanged - the price is the price.
