Harry Maguire left out of England World Cup squad as decisions made on former Sheffield United loanees

Thomas Tuchel has officially named his 26-man England squad for the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Former Sheffield United loanee Morgan Gibbs-White has joined Harry Maguire in being left out of England’s 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Boss Thomas Tuchel officially named his final squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico on Friday morning and there was no room for the former United duo.

It emerged on Thursday afternoon that Maguire had been informed he would not be selected for this summer’s showpiece event on the other side of the Atlantic, meaning he has missed out on a third successive World Cup appearance for the Three Lions.

The centre-back, who left Bramall Lane in 2014 to join Hull City, played an important role in helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and then the quarter-finals in Qatar four years later. He admitted on Thursday evening that he is both “shocked and gutted” by his omission.

His omission has been widely criticised by England supporters, who believe his tournament experience would have been invaluable to Tuchel and the Three Lions this summer. He has also been a regular starter for Manchester United in the second half of this season, contributing to their progress under Michael Carrick.

Former United loanee Gibbs-White, who spent the duration of the 2021/22 season at Bramall Lane, scoring 12 goals, is another headline omission from the 26-man squad.

He has enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Nottingham Forest this term, scoring 17 goals across all competitions to help them preserve their Premier League status and reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.

However, Tuchel, who has also left Phil Foden and Cole Palmer out of his 26-man squad, has selected Arsenal ace Eberechi Eze, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham ahead of Gibbs-White amid the luxury of options he has available to him in the No.10 position.

On the flip side, former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has made the cut, joining Jordan Pickford of Everton and Manchester City’s James Trafford in making up the goalkeeping department.

The Crystal Palace shot-stopper, who made 86 appearances across two loan spells at Bramall Lane, is heading to his first World Cup after missing out in 2022. He was part of the Three Lions squad that reached the European Championship final in 2024.
