Sheffield United and Chris Wilder are on the right lines with their transfer window blueprint

Sheffield United are planning to bring more Championship experience into their ranks, meaning their target list already makes perfect sense.

Following an underwhelming 2025/26 campaign, Sheffield United are gearing up for what manager Chris Wilder hopes will be a transformative summer transfer window.

Last summer’s decision to sack Wilder and appoint Rubén Selles proved very costly for the Blades, meaning they fell well short of their pre-season expectation of challenging for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Questionable player recruitment did not help United’s cause, either, meaning they had to settle for a 13th-placed finish. It means anything but progress next season will be viewed as a massive failure.

With Wilder overseeing proceedings this summer, most United supporters are optimistic the club will make progressive strides next season and be among the contenders fighting for promotion to the Premier League. An expanded play-off system means the top eight will each have a chance of securing promotion to the top flight for the 2027/28 campaign.

In their quest to achieve that mission, United are planning to increase the levels of experience within their ranks by bringing in established Championship players. The Star has already revealed that Ipswich Town ace Jack Clarke and Lewis Dobbin, who excelled on loan at Preston North End this season, of Aston Villa are among their targets.

Although the aforementioned duo are experienced in the second tier, making 246 Championship appearances between them, Clarke does not turn 26 until November and Dobbin is only 23.

It is players of that ilk United are right to be planning to try and pursue this summer. Clarke and Dobbin, for example, have enough experience at this level in the bank without being on the other side of their respective peaks.

Clarke started playing in the Championship for Leeds United in 2018/19 and either side of his stint at Tottenham Hotspur has proven himself as an outstanding Championship operator. He scored 16 goals in the second tier this season, playing a starring role in Ipswich securing an immediate return to the Premier League.

Dobbin’s season-long loan at Preston was his third loan spell in the Championship thus far, and it was his most fruitful by some distance, highlighting the importance of being patient with young players and giving them the time and the opportunity to grow into an environment as competitive and demanding as the Championship.

Just because Clarke and Dobbin are on United’s radar there is no cast iron guarantee either of them will end up at Bramall Lane this summer. Clarke is likely to be extremely difficult to extract from Portman Road, even on a loan deal, while Dobbin is highly likely to have a queue of suitors after scoring 11 goals during his time at Deepdale.

Nevertheless, Wilder and United are certainly on the right lines with their recruitment blueprint. It is players in the same mould of Clarke and Dobbin that United should be targeting, ensuring they bring in players with enough Championship experience in the bank but at the same time more than enough room for growth and development.

No signing, just like any managerial appointment, is guaranteed to work out successfully. However, going for a tried and tested figure feels as though it will offer a better route to success than gambling on an unproven figure at this level.

Wilder wants players who can deal with the demands and expectations that come with playing for a club of United’s stature in the Championship, while also bringing in individuals of the right character.

With experience, character and, of course, quality among the leading traits Wilder is looking for this summer, the Blades chief must ensure he strikes the right balance to bolster his squad in line with his blueprint.
