'Positive' - Billy Sharp gives Romelle Donovan verdict after Sheffield United win vs Wrexham
Romelle Donovan fully justified his recall to Sheffield United’s starting XI against Wrexham on Friday night.
Former Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp waxed lyrical about winger Romelle Donovan following his eye-catching display in Friday night’s 1-0 win over Wrexham at Bramall Lane.
After coming off the bench to create the Blades’ equaliser in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Derby County, Donovan made his first Championship start since the 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on September 8, taking his place in the starting XI against the Red Dragons.
Starting on the left flank, the Brentford loanee was electric throughout the contest, constantly showing for the ball and looking to make things happen in possession. He delivered nine crosses into the penalty area in total while also offering a threat with his pace in behind.
Blades supporters had been urging boss Chris Wilder to hand him a starting berth for several weeks, keen to see more excitement in their side’s play. Having made his presence felt against Phil Parkinson’s side, Donovan caught Sharp’s eye with his performance, with the former United striker particularly impressed by his attacking contributions and work rate.
Sharp, appearing on Sky Sports as a pundit, said: “He was positive from the off. He gets the fans off their seats. They have been crying out for him to play more games.
“He’s still a young lad learning the game but he’s exciting. Straight away from the off he was putting balls into the box, getting at players and making people commit fouls, bamboozling defenders.
“He was positive all night. I like the stuff he does off the ball as well. He works his socks off.”
United secured their third win in their last five matches via Ben Brereton Díaz’s first half winner. The Southampton loanee was in the right place at the right time to tap home from close range after Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson parried Jordan Ayew’s low drive into his path.
