Femi Seriki reflects on Sheffield United absence and explains why he is 'grateful' to Chris Wilder

Femi Seriki featured for the first time since August during Sheffield United’s 1-1 draw with Derby County on Saturday.

Sheffield United right-back Femi Seriki has admitted that the support of his teammates and the positivity around him helped him through his recent spell on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old featured for the first time since August on Saturday afternoon, coming off the bench to help United earn a 1-1 draw against Derby County at Bramall Lane.

Seriki was introduced in the 57th minute, replacing Hamza Choudhury, and helped United force their way back into the contest, with Patrick Bamford’s fifth Championship goal of the season cancelling out Bobby Clark’s opener for the Rams.

Seriki, who had made just four appearances this term before his return against the Rams, played a key role in United’s recovery, repeatedly pushing forward from right-back to occupy attacking positions on the right flank.

Delighted to be back in the mix after several weeks on the sidelines, Seriki, who was a key player for the Blades last term, admitted that the frustrations he experienced during his absence were eased by the support he received from those around him.

Seriki told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I feel like, despite the frustration I've felt, I've had the team and the people around me to help me stay positive. Obviously, I've been coming to the games, seeing the team, watching training and staying involved with them as much as I can.

“Obviously, with a different schedule, it's difficult, but having good characters around me is always good.”

Throughout his absence, United boss Chris Wilder regularly spoke about Seriki’s importance to the team, highlighting just how much the Blades were missing him.

“I’m grateful, obviously, to have a manager who backs me and wants me back in the team,” Seriki continued.

“So, yes, all I can do is get myself back to full fitness and then put on performances for the team.”

Reflecting on his cameo, which lasted a little over half an hour, Seriki concluded: “I think, for me, it was the perfect game to go into. Obviously, I didn't want to be on the losing side when coming on, but it was good to come in and show what I've got, attack, create crosses and everything.

“Yes, it's been exciting.”
