Leeds United man leads X-rated Chris Wilder chant 6 years after Sheffield United manager's 'muppet' comment

Sheffield United have had to watch their rivals celebrate promotion this week.

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford orchestrated an X-rated chant about Chris Wilder following his side’s promotion to the Premier League - six years after the Sheffield United boss called him a ‘muppet’.

United’s 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Easter Monday confirmed an automatic promotion place for their hosts and Yorkshire rivals Leeds, who thumped Stoke City 6-0 earlier in the day. Wilder’s side have now been consigned to the play-offs, with a run of four defeats in five seeing them drop from first to third in the blink of an eye.

Leeds’ post-promotion celebrations have been widely followed on social media and among the many videos to emerge is one of Bamford, who made his way to the gates outside Elland Road before kicking off a chant by shouting ‘Du, du, du’. That was followed up by the fans who then chanted ‘Wilder is a w*****!’, which was then repeated as Bamford watched on, opting against singing the second part himself.

Young Leeds striker Harry Gray, who at 16-years-old made his first-team debut against Stoke, was also seen dancing along to the chant. Separate videos also show Bramall Lane exit Jayden Bogle dancing to the same chant from a distance, although it’s unclear whether he is singing or can even hear it.

Patrick Bamford shows Leeds United and Sheffield United needle still sharp

There was plenty of needle during the build-up to both meetings between Leeds and United, the latter of which Bamford missed due to injury, and for many in West Yorkshire it stems back to previous comments made during another tense promotion race. The Blades pipped their rivals to a top-two spot during the 2018/19 campaign and Wilder took aim at the likes of Bamford during his side’s celebrations.

“We’ve had one defeat in 13 and I’ve got muppets from Leeds talking about the pressure being on us,” A victorious Wilder said in an interview back in 2019. “Bamford and Forshaw and a couple of others saying ‘it’s over to you’ and this, that and the other. They got beat seven times since Christmas. We’ve been beaten once. We’ve set it up from Christmas to be in the race and we’ve steamrolled it.”

Wilder has since made every effort to diffuse the tension over those comments, admitting ahead of United’s trip to Elland Road earlier this season they maybe weren’t the ‘wisest words’ to use. And the Blades boss has been very respectful of his rivals throughout the campaign.

“I know there’s a bit of pantomime in terms of what I said over [the 2018/19 promotion] period,” he said back in October. “Maybe not the wisest words when you’ve just got promoted and you’re four hours in to the celebrations. They’ll hold that against me personally but it’s not an issue for me, I respect and know what a huge club that is and what a massive challenge we’ve got on our hands Friday night.”
