Former Sheffield United striker Danny Ings snapped up by League One club on free transfer

Former Sheffield United striker Danny Ings has joined League One outfit Wycombe Wanderers.

Wycombe Wanderers have announced the signing of former Sheffield United striker Danny Ings on a free transfer.

Ings, who left Bramall Lane following the end of last season, signed a contract at Adams Park on Friday morning, becoming Wycombe’s second signing in as many days following their swoop for former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith on Thursday.

The Blades swooped Ings in August last year, signing him on a one-year deal after he had spent time training with the club. The deal included an option for United to extend the experienced striker’s stay at Bramall Lane, but they decided not to activate that option at the end of last term.

Ings, who could make his Wycombe debut when they host Reading at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon, was close to joining Leicester City during the summer transfer window, but the deal collapsed after the Foxes reportedly performed a U-turn.

The 34-year-old, who scored two goals in 24 appearances for the Blades, has not played in League One since leaving Bournemouth to join Burnley in August 2011. However, after spending a few days training with his new teammates, he will now be hoping to make his mark in England’s third tier for the first time in 15 years.

Wycombe’s Director of Football Strategy and Data Intelligence, Tom Stockwell, told the club’s website: “We are excited to welcome Danny Ings to Wycombe Wanderers. Danny is an attacking player with top quality and a huge amount of experience at the top of the game. We believe Danny can help the team on and off the pitch.

“He joined up with the team Friday last week and has trained with the group since, so we know he’s fit and sharp, and ready to have an immediate impact.”
