Fleetwood Town boss makes 'comfortable' admission after win vs 'unbelievable' Sheffield United

Sheffield United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night after losing 1-0 to Fleetwood Town.

Fleetwood Town head coach Matt Lawlor said he felt his side were “comfortable” during their 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Highbury Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Blades, who were trying to reach the fourth round of the competition for the first time in 12 years, were knocked out after Rhys Norrington-Davies scored an own goal in the second half.

In truth, United never got going on the Fylde Coast, producing a lacklustre performance that lacked imagination. It led to manager Chris Wilder delivering a scathing assessment when he addressed the media after the game.

Had United got the better of the League Two side, it would have sealed a fourth-round date with Arsenal at Bramall Lane next month. Instead, Mikel Arteta’s men will make the trip to Highbury Stadium for what promises to be a historic night for Fleetwood.

Still unbeaten in league and cup competition this season, Cod Army boss Lawlor was delighted with his side’s performance against the Blades, admitting that he felt they handled the quality within United’s ranks without any kind of fuss.

“I'm massively proud of the performance and the result against an unbelievable team, obviously, in terms of championship team,” Lawlor told BBC Radio Lancashire. “[They have an] unbelievable manager, someone I've got huge admiration for from afar.

“I couldn’t be more pleased and proud of our performance today.

“We rode our luck at times with that clean sheet, I think. But I think, in general, we were comfortable in terms of what we had.

“I thought we defended unbelievably well, and we had to because of the quality that they possess. Look at what was coming off their bench, for example, and what started.

“It’s really, really, really unbelievable players that are starting and coming off the bench. So, yes, we had to be focused for the 95, 96 minutes of the game. I’m really, really pleased with it.”
