Former Sheffield United defender Ben Mee announces surprise post-retirement role

Former Sheffield United centre-back Ben Mee announced his retirement earlier this year.

Former Sheffield United centre-back Ben Mee has become the latest former professional footballer to join the Baller League.

It was announced on Tuesday that Mee, who announced his retirement from professional football at the end of last season following his departure from Bramall Lane, has joined Deportrio, who are managed by former Manchester City players Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge.

Baller League is a six-a-side football competition that originated in Germany in 2024 and was created by entrepreneur Felix Starck. Baller League UK was launched in March 2025 and is made up of 12 teams.

By linking up with Deportrio, Mee has joined a team that already features a number of former professional footballers, including former Derby County and Leicester City striker Martyn Waghorn, ex-Charlton Athletic and Watford forward Marvin Sordell, former Manchester United youngster Josh Harrop, and one-time Premier League title winner Marc Albrighton, who won English football’s ultimate prize with Leicester City in 2016.

Eleven games into this season’s Baller League UK campaign, Deportrio are currently second in the table, three points behind league leaders NDL.

A host of big names in English football have taken part in the competition in either a playing or managerial capacity, including Ian Wright and Alan Shearer.

Mee, 37, is yet to comment on his Baller League adventure. The former Brentford and Burnley man, who has done some punditry work since announcing his retirement at the end of last season, spent just one season with the Blades after arriving on a free transfer in September last year.

Mee made just 16 appearances for the Blades, with his last outing for the club coming in January. He was a regular starter until the end of November.
