Sheffield United icon faces uncertain future after surprising contract admission despite prolific form
Despite scoring 18 goals in an impressive season at Barnsley, former Sheffield United favourite David McGoldrick claims he has yet to receive any indication over a new deal - leaving his next move unclear heading into the summer.
David McGoldrick, the Sheffield United icon, has opened up on his uncertain future at the Blades’ neighbours Barnsley despite a stellar season seeing him score 18 goals already on his return to South Yorkshire. The former Blades man is now 38 but still banging in the goals at League One level.
That hasn’t earned him any sort of security over his future, however, claiming that he is still in the dark over his future ahead of his contract expiry this summer. McGoldrick is still a popular figure at Bramall Lane after a remarkable four-year spell that saw him help them into the Premier League before finishing ninth in the top flight.
There will even be some Unitedites who would welcome him back now as part of Chris Wilder’s big summer rebuild, such was his impact at Bramall Lane. If the Reds don’t act soon to tie him down, then he will have no shortage of suitors.
Sheffield United icon facing bizarrely uncertain future after contract silence despite prolific season
Speaking on media duty ahead of this weekend’s clash with Bradford City at Oakwell, McGoldrick admitted on his future: “I haven't heard anything. I haven't been told anything. It's been quiet. I think the club have wanted to get into a position where they can speak to players.
“There are a lot of people out of contract. There are a lot of loans that have got to get sorted. I'm just a player at this club and I haven't heard anything. I haven't been spoken to. As far as I take it, I've got two and a half weeks left or whatever it is.”
He may be in the twilight of his playing career that began at boyhood Notts County all those years ago but McGoldrick is in no mood to slow down, as his recent record in front of goal only shows.
“I've got myself back to where I want to be and it would be silly for me to stop now,” he added. “So, I’ll have a little break in the off-season and see what it is. If Barnsley come to the table, if anything else comes to the table. But it's got to be right.
“I'm not doing it just for the sake of playing. I like it here. It's easy to get to from home. I’ve got a great rapport with all the staff, everyone around the building. It's good. So we'll see. But I’ll definitely carry on.
“Scoring 15 in the league, 18 altogether ... I think it would be a bit daft for me to say step away as I'm as fit as anyone. I haven't lost my pace because I had no pace. It's all in the mind.
“So as long as my mind's okay, then I can still score goals. It's not being arrogant. It's not being cocky. But I can score goals. And as long as my fitness is fine, then I'll continue to score goals.”
