Sources in Glasgow last night confirmed Baldock’s name features on a list of potential new signings presented to and then approved by Ange Postecoglou, who was officially unveiled as Neil Lennon’s successor on Friday.

Postecoglou has confirmed he wants to focus on acquiring British based talent this summer, with Baldock fitting the profile the ex-Australia head coach has devised as he attempts to overhaul an ageing and underperforming side which finished 25 points behind arch-rivals Rangers last term.

The development marks the culmination of a near two year process, with staff inside Celtic’s recruitment and development department first compiling a dossier on Baldock’s progress following their promotion to the Premier League in 2019.

Although they decided against making a move for him then, Postecoglou’s employers have continued to track Baldock’s progress ever since. With United surrendering their top-flight status last season, Celtic now believe Baldock could be tempted by the prospect of heading north of the border - where he would be guaranteed to challenge for silverware. Playing in Europe could also strengthen his case for an international call-up by Greece after it was confirmed he qualifies by virtue of a Greek born grandparent.

Baldock, aged 28, joined United from MK Dons in 2018. A member of the squad Chris Wilder led into the PL two years later, his contract in South Yorkshire has another three years left to run.

The Hoops are desperate to add to their squad quickly, with their Champions League qualifying campaign coming up against Danish side Midtjylland on July 20.

"Look, we're working hard, and it's a challenging time all around the world in terms of signing players and the ability to even watch players," Postecoglou said upon his arrival.

"But the club's working awfully hard, I'm pushing them as hard as I can and we're hoping we can make some announcements very, very soon.

"And certainly, from our perspective, there is some urgency in at least a couple of positions — particularly with this game coming up in four weeks' time."
