Sheffield United fans given major January transfer update after summer sales “reset the clock”

Stephen Bettis has explained what Sheffield United’s summer sales mean for January - with the Blades under no pressure to sell but also unlikely to make a major splash in the transfer market.

Sheffield United are not under pressure to sell more key players in the January window after their summer work ‘reset the clock’ in terms of complying with financial rules - but it isn’t expected to be a month of splashing the cash either. The Blades sold three key men in the off-season to hit their squad cost ratio compliance level.

The departures of Gus Hamer, Andre Brooks and Callum O’Hare has left United’s squad with less creativity, though, which has been apparent in their season so far. They return to action after the international break this weekend 18th in the Championship table.

Boss Chris Wilder recently hinted that the financial landscape could be different by the time the January sales open, with Unitedites hopeful that the Blades’ squad can receive a fresh injection of quality at the halfway stage.

But others in the more pessimistic camp fear more departures, with the futures of key men such as Sydie Peck and Femi Seriki - who United turned down bids for in the summer - again expected to come into question.

“It [the summer sales] has reset the clock,” chief executive Stephen Bettis told local media this week. “There’s no requirement for us to sell players in January.

“We are complying, and we are sticking to the rules which is the most important thing. The work in the summer wasn’t a decision, it had to be done. It wasn't a choice; we had to do it.

“I tried to give hints here and there to the supporters, to try and make it less painful when [sales] happened, but I didn't want to go into too much detail.

“Because, if you're selling your car or your house, you're not going out and saying that, actually, you really need the money. Because then, they try and lowball you on the offers they make.

“So I wasn’t trying to let the world know that we needed to sell to be SCR compliant. There's only so much you can say without looking like you're trying to have a fire sale to get to SCR numbers.”

United banked more than £20m from the sales of their three most creative players from last season but Bettis is keen to temper any expectation of a big outlay in January.

“Personally I don't see us spending huge sums of money in January,” he admitted. “Not at all. We've got one loan spot available still and if anything really interesting comes up, I think there would be a conversation about it.

“Being mindful of what that looked like from an SCR perspective as well. It may not be what supporters want to hear, but I'd rather tell you the truth. And that is that I don't see us writing big cheques for players in January. But we’re under no pressure to sell either.”

The situation could change, though, if United are in a better position in the league when the new-year madness begins again. “There is a little bit of headroom now,” added Bettis.

“So I think if we really see a change in performances, where we are getting up there, I definitely think there would be discussions.”
