Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder doubles down on subs against Derby County after Romelle Donovan impact
Wilder has given his reasons for his substitutions against Derby in an attempt to clinch all three points
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has doubled down on his substitutions against Derby County at Bramall Lane on Saturday.
United were held to a draw by Derby, despite the visitors being forced to play without their only available centre-back after a second yellow being shown to Dion Sanderson in the 66th minute.
The sending-off completely changed the game's dynamic alongside the introduction of Romelle Donovan, who injected new life into the game and assisted Patrick Bamford’s equaliser with a fantastic cross from the edge of the box.
Jordan Ayew was also brought onto the pitch at the same time, with Tyrese Campbell also making an appearance with 10 minutes to go when Bamford was hurt scoring the equaliser.
On Donovan, Wilder said: “When he comes on, he has to make an instant impact, and he did. Unfortunately, I can't play three wingers. The shape of the team doesn't allow that to happen.
“There was no room in behind - that’s Tyrese’s game. Tyrese's come on because of Pat coming off.
“Jordan is into feet, round the box and sniffing goals. So there wasn't any room in behind. Tyrese is a stretcher and runner.
“Fortunately, he made some really good movements and got across people. One of those things where it didn't really fall for him in the box.
“I think there was one where he was flashing across the face of the goal. And really it's just a tap in for Chongy if he just sees it a split second earlier. In the 90th minute and the game's gone.
Derby goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom made 10 saves across the match, including a brilliant one low down to his left to deny substitute Sydie Peck a winner.
“Their keeper made some unbelievable saves and maybe we needed just a little bit more quality and composure when we get into that really crucial part with 10 or 15 minutes to go,” Wilder added.
“I think if you look at where the ball was and the heat map on the ball. That's where we wanted it to be.
“They packed the middle. We have to go around the outsides. We got into that position. We just didn't find that last little bit that goes and puts them to bed. But like I said to you at the start, you have to compliment all their players.”
