Sheffield United placed Anel Ahmedhodzic in quarantine ahead of tomorrow’s match at Cardiff City, although they still expect the centre-half to recover from illness in time to face Mark Hudson’s side.

Ahmedhodzic, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, has not trained with the rest of Paul Heckingbottom’s squad since complaining of feeling unwell during the midweek defeat by Rotherham.

Although he refused to divulge the exact nature of Ahmedhodzic’s illness, which flared up shortly after kick-off, or if he was scheduled to travel separately to the rest of the squad, Heckingbottom did express the belief he would be passed fit for United’s final outing before the World Cup break.

“We’ve kept Anel away from the others,” Heckingbottom confirmed. “But he should be okay. That’s what we think. We’re positive.”

If Heckingbottom’s hunch proves to be incorrect, then Chris Basham is expected to replace Ahmedhodzic in the Welsh capital despite receiving treatment for a damaged hip flexor muscle. Basham was introduced when his team mate was unable to continue against the visitors from New York Stadium, although Heckingbottom later acknowledged it “would have been better” if he “hadn’t got so many” minutes. Midfielder James McAtee is also being nursed through an injury, which explained why he was substituted after coming on as a substitute himself when John Fleck was withdrawn.

With United not scheduled to play again until December 10 following their outing in Cardiff, Heckingbottom said: “There’s a lot of lads out there who, credit to them, are carrying things and who aren’t 100 percent or near it. But they’re making themselves available, so no excuses.”
