Prompted by McCoist’s praise for Fleck, Warnock said: I think they had been tempted to let him go two or three times.

“I had his agent on a while ago saying 'I think he'll be leaving the club' but what's he done? He's done it on the pitch. He's worked his socks off, scored important goals and been part of that dressing room.

“They've got a great chance of getting in Europe. An absolutely great chance.”

Warnock also said he would like skipper Billy Sharp to stay at Bramall Lane.

Sharp had been linked with loan moves to among others, Nottingham Forest, Celtic and Leeds United but Warnock is delighted to have seen him start the last two games.

“I hope he doesn’t go,” Warnock said. “I know there are one or two clubs that want him in the Championship but he is Sheffield United through and through.

“I think it’s great to see him sticking in there and coming on and making a difference.”
