And if Chris Wilder’s men pull off a shock win they will be repeating a feat achieved on April 2 1994 when a brace from Jostein Flo cancelled out Ian Rush’s early effort to secure all three points for Dave Bassett’s struggling side. Here’s the United side which won on Merseyside nearly 26 years ago.
9. Franz Carr
Pacey winger Carr is best remembered for his spell at Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough, but is also one of a number of men to have starred for both United and Wednesday. He made 19 appearances for the Blades in the 1993-94 campaign after signing from Newcastle United for £180,000. He left for Leicester City the following season and also counts Aston Villa, Reggiana in Italy and West Bromwich Albion among his former clubs. Photo: Trevor Cook
10. Jostein Flo
Norwegian striker Flo was bought as a replacement for Brian Deane and made an instant impact when he scored on his home debut against Wimbledon. Sadly his nine goals in the 1993-94 season could not save the Blades from relegation from the top flight - although his brace in the win at Anfield will forever be remembered by United supporters. He scored 19 goals in 84 appearances for the club before returning to Norway with Strømsgodset. Photo: Les Payne
11. Adrian Littlejohn
Forward Littlejohn shot to prominence when he fired the Blades to a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Bramall Lane in September 1992 - one of 12 goals he scored in two spells with United. He clocked up more than 70 appearances in his first stint with the club between 1991 and 1995 and turned out just three times when he returned in 2001 on a non-contract basis under Neil Warnock, before leaving two years later. He also had spells with a number of clubs, including Plymouth Argyle, Port Vale, Walsall and Bury. Photo: Stuart Hastings (Staff)
