And if Chris Wilder’s men pull off a shock win they will be repeating a feat achieved on April 2 1994 when a brace from Jostein Flo cancelled out Ian Rush’s early effort to secure all three points for Dave Bassett’s struggling side. Here’s the United side which won on Merseyside nearly 26 years ago.
5. David Tuttle
Central defender Tuttle made more than 60 appearances for the Blades, scoring one goal, between 1993 and 1996. The Reading-born man began his playing career at Tottenham Hotspur, and also had spells at Crystal Palace, Barnsley and Millwall - for whom he managed for a short spell in the 2005-06 season. 6. John Gannon
Midfielder Gannon was another player brought to the club by legendary boss Dave Bassett, initially on loan from Wimbledon during the 1988-89 season. He signed permanently on a free transfer for the start of the 1989-90 campaign and played a key role in helping United gain back-to-back promotions to the old First Division. He played more than 150 times for the Blades before leaving for Oldham in 1996. Photo: Submitted
7. Paul Rogers
Midfielder Rogers joined Sheffield United from non-league Sutton United for a fee of £35,000 in January 1992. He went on to make over 120 league appearances for the club before moving to Notts County in 1995. Rogers was part of the Sutton team that produced one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history when they defeated then top flight outfit Coventry City in the FA Cup 3rd Round in 1989. 8. Dane Whitehouse
One-club man winger Whitehouse's United career spanned 13 years and he will be remembered as an accomplished winger who could also play at left-back. The Sheffield-born star scored 50 goals in 275 appearances for the Blades - becoming a cult hero among the Bramall Lane faithful for a knack of scoring against arch rivals Wednesday. He was forced to retire from the game in 2000 due to a serious knee injury sustained in a game against Port Vale during the 1997-98 campaign. Photo: Steve Ellis
