As The Star reported last month, a fundraising drive was organised to help pay for much-needed adaptations to the home of ex-Blade John MacPhail, the Scottish defender who played 169 times for United and also had spells at Sunderland and Bristol City during his playing days.

The 66-year-old suffered a serious brain injury following a fall at his home and is unlikely to ever walk again. He fell into a coma following the accident and is now being cared for at The Bridge rehabilitation centre in Middlesbrough, with his family hope to bring him home next year.

To do so, adaptations will have to be made to his home in the north-east and a fundraising drive was launched, with United hoping to help swell the coffers further at a Bramall Lane event on November 24. Iconic former Blades striker Edwards has now been added to the bill, along with Mick Trusson and Mick Henderson.

Tony Kenworthy, Colin Morris, Keith Waugh and Steve Charles will also join Paul Stancliffe and Tony Currie to look back at the memorable 1981/82 promotion season, in which MacPhail played a key role. “Sheffield United would also like to play its part and help to get John back where he belongs,” a club statement read.

Tickets for the pie-and-peas event are £30 – with £20 going to MacPhail’s appeal – and are available from United's box office.
