Sheffield united: Skipper announces her departure from Bramall Lane

Ellie Gilliat, who captained Sheffield United Women to a fifth placed finish in the FA Championship last term, has announced her departure from the club.

Gilliat revealed the demands of balancing work, university and family with her football commitments were behind the decision, although she conceded it had not been "taken lightly."

With Carla Ward announcing plans to challenge for the top four next term, only a year after being granted a place in the revamped competition, Gilliat said: "I spoke through the season with Carla about the situation. The targets Wardy has quite rightly set for next season are something I don't think I can meet on a personal level, especially because as captain you need to lead by example."

"I've been immensley proud to work with Wardy, this group of girls and to wear the Sheffield United badge," Gilliat added.

Previously of Sheffield FC, one of Gilliat's final acts in a United jersey was scoring a goal against Millwall earlier this month as Ward's side finished the campaign with a seventh consecutive victory.

"Ellie has done so well this season managing her career, family and playing for United," Ward said.
