Sheffield United’s Katie Wilkinson has been named the FA Women’s Championship player of the month after scoring five times in her last three league outings.

Wilkinson lifted December’s award having followed goals against London City Lionesses and London Bees with a hat-trick during United’s 4-1 victory over Leicester City; a result which ensured they enter Sunday’s meeting with leaders Aston Villa knowing a win will lift them to the top of the table.

Carla Ward, the United manager, said: “I’m delighted for Wilko. She has finished the year really well, not only in terms of her goals but she has also contributed to the team brilliantly. This is thoroughly deserved.”

Wilkinson, who barring injury or illness is set to start that match at the Proact Stadium (kick-off 2pm), was also on target twice as United beat their namesakes from Coventry to advance into the knockout stages of the Continental Cup. They are scheduled to face the Super League side, also at Chesterfield, next week.

Those efforts brought Wilkinson’s tally for the campaign to a remarkable 17 in only 16 outings.

It is the third time she has been nominated for the trophy since moving to South Yorkshire from the Bees.

Tickets for United’s games with Villa and City are available as part of a two match package priced £5 adults and £3 concessions via the Bramall Lane box office. Season ticket holders can gain free entry to both fixtures, upon production of a valid card at the turnstiles.
