The Blades had taken the lead through Kean Bryan, drafted in the squad because of a late injury to Enda Stevens and although Harry Maguire had equalised for the high-flying Red Devils, Oliver Burke’s deflected effort sealed an incredible win for Chris Wilder’s side.

It was no smash and grab – the division’s bottom club outfought Man United and gave them very few opportunities on goal, with veteran defender Phil Jagielka turning back the clock with a sensational display.

However, while those on the receiving end were understandably not best pleased, it was the officials who took the brunt of their frustration.

Replays showed that Billy Sharp had given David De Gea a slight nudge as the goalkeeper attempted to catch a corner and was beaten to the ball by Kean Bryan.

Then Anthony Martial had the ball in the net for the home side but no goal was given as referee Peter Bankes adjudged Maguire to have fouled Blades keeper Aaron Ramsdale in the build-up.

The Manchester United captain and former Blade was incensed.

"It's incredible,' said Maguire. “There's no doubt that Billy Sharp's is more of a foul than what I did. Maybe people will say both aren't fouls, but not David's isn't and that one is.

"I jumped for the ball. I don't think I touched the keeper, he touches me in the back, my arms are nowhere near him. I think the referee will look back and know he's made a mistake.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer agreed with his skipper.

"Their first goal was a foul, Billy Sharp runs into him. So it's a foul, he said afterwards.

"At the other end, no foul. So that's two mistakes by the referee and that's the inconsistencies."
