Hull City, Sheffield United’s Championship rivals, are close to appointing their new manager – and it isn’t former Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal, who they had previously been heavily linked with.

The Tigers are finalising a successor to Shota Arveladze, who was sacked after just nine months in charge with Hull fifth bottom in the Championship.

Carvalhal, who signed a one-year deal at Al Wahda FC in the UAE Pro League in the summer, had been heavily linked with the post and became the bookies’ favourite for the post earlier in the week.

But Hull are close to finalising a deal to appoint former Olympiacos boss Pedro Martins, according to a report in The Athletic.

Martins was at the MKM Stadium ahead of tonight’s game against Wigan and led Olympiacos to three league titles and a domestic double before leaving in January.

One of Arveladze’s final games in charge was a home defeat to the Blades before he was sacked after the international break.
