The Referee

Anthony Taylor, from Cheshire, will take charge of the match, assisted by Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn. Jarred Gillett, the Australian who joined Select Group 2 after enrolling on a research course at a Liverpool university, is scheduled to be the fourth official while Stuart Attwell is on VAR duties. Taylor, who averages 4.37 cautions per game this term, has overseen matches involving United twice since August - issuing a total of three yellow cards during their defeat by Liverpool at Bramall Lane and FA Cup victory over Millwall. He has taken charge of Manchester United fixtures on five occasions - returning an average of 4.6 bookings per fixture across those assignments.

The Last Time Out

Chris Wilder’s team and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side shared the points at Bramall Lane earlier this season following a 3-3 draw which the United manager described earlier this week as one of his favourite games since taking charge in 2016. United raced into a 2-0 lead when Lys Mousset doubled their advantage early in the second period following John Fleck’s opener. But three goals in the space of seven minutes - from Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford saw the visitors regain the advantage before Oli McBurnie equalised in added time. United enjoyed less possession (41 per cent) than the 20-time English champions during the match but produced more shots (12/11) and more attempts on target (8/5) than their opponents.

The Form Guide

This will be Manchester United’s second outing of ‘Project Restart’ after they marked their return to action with a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur. That result stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 games; a sequence which has seen them win eight and score 30 goals. They have conceded only three since their last defeat, when Burnley triumphed 2-0 at Old Trafford on January 22. United have endured a frustrating return to action, drawing at Aston Villa after a technological glitch failed to spot Oliver Norwood had scored a legitimate goal before losing 3-0 at Newcastle on Sunday. However, with Liverpool and Manchester City the only other clubs to beat them this year, Wilder’s players will climb above Manchester United if they win.

The Treatment Table

United, who prepared for this contest in seventh, will be without the suspended John Egan while on-loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson is ineligible for selection against his parent club. David McGoldrick, Phil Jagielka and Jack O'Connell are undergoing treatment for injuries.
