Woodhouse, who came through the ranks at Bramall Lane and remains their youngest-ever captain, moved to Birmingham City in a £1m deal before retiring early from playing to pursue a boxing career.

He moved into management with Tadcaster Albion and Gainsborough Trinity and was today announced as the new boss of Marske United, who are currently 16th in the Northern Premier League Premier Division with 20 points from 14 games.

A club statement described Woodhouse as bringing “a plethora of management experience to the club, most notably during his time at Gainsborough Trinity, where he surpassed expectations in the NPL.”

Woodhouse said: “I’m thrilled to be announced as the new Marske United manager. It is a fantastic football club with lots of potential. After sitting down with Mark [Harkin, chairman] and the board I was left excited about the journey ahead of us.

"It’s not going to be easy or instant but together we can get back on track and get moving forward again. I like my teams to play fast and furious, be on the front foot and forcing the pace. Anything less than everything isn’t enough. Talk is very cheap, let’s get to work.”
