Chris Wilder makes 'trust' call as Sheffield United rebuild continues after frustrating Wolves setback

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder believes supporters should have “a little bit more faith” in what he and his players are trying to achieve after Sunday’s narrow defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Chris Wilder believes he and his players have earned more faith and patience from a section of Sheffield United fans as the Blades look to make it to next week’s international break relatively unscathed. United have started the season in decent shape on the pitch despite a summer of turmoil off it.

Saturday’s last-minute defeat to promotion contenders Wolves was their second in nine games so far, and victory at Fleetwood tomorrow night would see them through to round four of the League Cup.

Wilder is having to be pragmatic about United’s approach after being shorn of his three most creative players from last season in the summer transfer market, with several of those he brought in as replacements still getting up to speed.

The elongated international break, which follows Saturday’s trip to Stoke City, has been earmarked as key both in terms of physical work for those players and wider tactical work with the whole Blades group.

And speaking after Raul Jiminez’s 90th-minute winner at Bramall Lane on Saturday, Wilder admitted: “There's no patting people on the back because we don’t like losing but I do think from my point of view, my energy level personally and enthusiasm is as high as they've ever been.

“My knowledge, personally, and the knowledge of the coaches that I work with is good. I'm an experienced campaigner in the Championship. I've won a few games in that division.

“I had a bit of success in that division. So when I say we need a bit of patience and people need to trust us a little bit ... I think days like today, they'd look at that and go: ‘Yeah, I get it.’

“There's always going to be an element that don't get it. I really don't understand why they do come to watch football games because I go and watch my team and have a moan and a groan.

“But I come to support and I've got to say, I thought 95 per cent and even more today were right behind us. And I think they'll see that. We're all after getting to Stoke and getting beyond the international break but I thought the level of performance was good.”

Wilder played a back three against Wolves but could shift again this week against Fleetwood and Stoke. “We can coach all different formations, and it’s not a build. It's a game-to-game scenario,” Wilder added.

“There's none of that build. It's a case of what can we do to the next game? And that's how it will be right the way through to the end of the season. All I'll say to people is that the players are on board, and they're giving everything for the shirt.

“I talked about it but last season, that wasn't the case. The new players gave everything. Jordan [Ayew, new free agent signing] came onto the pitch. I'm going to have a bit of a moan about that as well, because I don't know who supporters think we're expecting to sign in that window.

“I'm delighted with the Jordan signing. The reception he's got was really positive and I thought his performance was good. And he will get better. He’s an experienced player, linked it, stretched it, was positive, showed his quality.

“He’s played loads of games, captained his country. Maybe just a little bit, maybe should have a little bit more faith in what we're trying to achieve. But we’ll control what we can control, which is the players' performance. It was good today and we have to keep moving that forward.”
