Sheffield United are about to make “their best signing of this transfer window” by tying one of their promising young players down to a new contract, according to owner HRH Prince Abdullah bin Musa'ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The identity of the player has not been publicly confirmed, although promising youngster Iliman Ndiaye has recently returned to the fold at Bramall Lane after a contract dispute which is understood to have resulted in influential figures behind the scenes, despite issuing no official directive, effectively discouraging his selection at the back end of last season by letting it be known that they believed the priority should have been players whose long-term futures were committed to United.

While caretaker boss Paul Heckingbottom blooded a number of youngsters after assuming temporary charge from Chris Wilder, who was not influenced in his team or squad selection, including Femi Seriki and Daniel Jebbison, it was noticeable that Ndiaye disappeared from view for both the first-team and U23s soon after making his senior debut away at Leicester City.

“We’re about to sign one of our youngsters and this could be our best signing this window,” the Prince revealed.

“I don’t want to say the name until it’s done.”

Ndiaye scored twice in United’s U23 win at Charlton in midweek after coming off the bench in the EFL win over Derby County.
