And he’s gone so far as to describe Wilder as a ‘tactical genius’.

Neil Warnock, who also took the Blades to the Premier League, unsurprisingly, is a big fan of Wilder's no-nonsense approach but it’s how he has got United playing that has impressed most.

The Blades were well-placed to pick up a European spot before football was shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Warnock still can’t believe how Wilder has managed it.

“I just think he's an amazing, amazing tactical genius,” Warnock said on ‘Eamonn and the Gaffers’. “He's played this way all the way and even now when I watch the way his team plays, I don't know how to to combat it.

“You've got people doing things that were never heard of before.

"Because Chris is the way he is, he’s not everybody's cup of tea. He’s not Mr Smoothie or anything like that. He says it how it is. But his tactics are amazing.

"And they could quite easily - I've said all along - get into the European positions this year.

“Not just because nobody knows how to play against them - home or away. They’ll have a 20 minutes spell like they did against Man United where other teams will just work it out for 10 minutes and score goals.

"But in general, they've got a system that is so difficult.”

Warnock went on to point out how well-suited Wilder is to the job due to his roots.

“Well, I think he I think he's a little bit like me, passionate-wise,” he said.

“He likes his players to play and when you manage a club, like Sheffield United, especially when you're being born in Sheffield, like Chris and myself, you get it.

“They go to work. They work hard, the people in Sheffield. I’m not saying they don't everywhere else in the country but you know what I mean? You contribute to all that when you’re the manager of the club. And at the moment Sheffield United’s fans can’t believe it.”
