17 players you may have forgotten played for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday - in pictures
We all know all about the Terry Curran switch, the ‘Geary, Quinn, Bromby’ triple steal and then there’s David McGoldrick. But what of the men you might not remember have played for both Sheffield clubs?
The two clubs have had a monumental crossover down the years and no fewer than 69 men have represented both the red and blue sides of the city, according to the English National Football Archive.
It’s hardly surprising perhaps, given the comparative size of the two clubs – see how we kept things neutral there?
Here’s a run-through of a few players that you might have forgotten once called both Hillsborough and Bramall Lane home.

17. Joe Mattock
Defender Mattock - a former England youth international - spent three seasons as a Wednesday player from 2012 until 2015, making 58 league appearances along the way. But a short loan spell at United came before, when he made only 13 appearances in the 2010/11 campaign. Completed a South Yorkshire triple by signing for Rotherham United after Wednesday. Photo: .
A bustling striker brought down from Celtic to join Wednesday in 2001, Johnson's time at Hillsborough was short and despite three goals in eight league outings was not spectacularly sweet - he left for Kilmarnock and then Gillingham a few months later. From the Gills he joined Sheffield United in 2005 and managed only one appearance as injuries again blighted his efforts at Bramall Lane. Photo: .
