17 players you may have forgotten played for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday - in pictures
We all know all about the Terry Curran switch, the ‘Geary, Quinn, Bromby’ triple steal and then there’s David McGoldrick. But what of the men you might not remember have played for both Sheffield clubs?
The two clubs have had a monumental crossover down the years and no fewer than 69 men have represented both the red and blue sides of the city, according to the English National Football Archive.
It’s hardly surprising perhaps, given the comparative size of the two clubs – see how we kept things neutral there?
Here’s a run-through of a few players that you might have forgotten once called both Hillsborough and Bramall Lane home.

13. Danny Batth
A promotion winner with Wednesday in 2012, Batth could well be an Owl now had an attempt to bring him back to Hillsborough not collapsed back in January. Lees memorable, perhaps, his short loan stint with United in 2010 - he played only once before he was recalled by Wolves. Photo: .
A popular figure at Wednesday having joined last year and become a near ever-present, Johnson is another whose cross-city involvement relied on a short loan tenure. That came at Bramall Lane in the 2018/19 season, when he made 11 league appearances with mixed results. Photo: .
A legendary Wednesday figure perhaps known more for his efforts off the field rather than on it, Wilkinson played 22 times for the Owls between 1962 and 1966 before returning to manage the club to huge success in 1983. Before all that though came the early stages of a playing career at Sheffield United, where he failed to make a first team appearance. Photo: .
Now at Wednesday and nursing the early stages of a horrible injury that sees him likely to miss the rest of the season, Heneghan quickly became a fan favourite at S6. That's more than he managed at S2, when Chris Wilder didn't give him a league start after a tug-of-war transfer window left him with a player he all but admitted he didn't necessarily want. Photo: .
