17 players you may have forgotten played for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday - in pictures
We all know all about the Terry Curran switch, the ‘Geary, Quinn, Bromby’ triple steal and then there’s David McGoldrick. But what of the men you might not remember have played for both Sheffield clubs?
The two clubs have had a monumental crossover down the years and no fewer than 69 men have represented both the red and blue sides of the city, according to the English National Football Archive.
It’s hardly surprising perhaps, given the comparative size of the two clubs – see how we kept things neutral there?
Here’s a run-through of a few players that you might have forgotten once called both Hillsborough and Bramall Lane home.

5. Dean Windass
Surely better known for the Blades version of two brief encounters in the early 00s, Windass Snr first stepped out in the blue and white when he arrived on loan from Middlesbrough in 2001. Injury cut that short and he rocked up at Bramall Lane not long after, signing permanently on a short-term deal in 2003. His son now plays in Sheffield too, we're told... Photo: .
Yet another player whose time on both sides of the city was brief, Scottish goalkeeper Turner first spent time at S6 on loan from Everton in 2007, making 11 league appearances. It wasn't until seven years later that he completed the Sheffield double, becoming a Blade in 2014 in a deal that took him from Barnsley. In perfect symmetry he made.. 11 league appearances. Photo: .
A goalkeeper whose career spanned over 30 years at a range of clubs, Lance Key holds the rare record of having been signed on at both Sheffield clubs without having played a league game for either. He was stuck behind some decent ones, mind - the likes of Chris Turner, Kevin Pressman and Chris Woods at Wednesday and Alan Kelly in a brief time at United. Photo: .
A popular figure moreso on the blue half, Chris O'Grady spent two seasons at Hillsborough between 2011 and 2013 - bagging against the Blades in the process not once but twice. He scored for United when on a loan from Brighton in the 2014/15 season - but it was a brief encounter of four appearances. Photo: .
