Ex-Sheffield United pair handed late World Cup call-up as they offer behind-the-scenes coverage of tournament

Harry Maguire and Millie Bright might not be playing international football this summer, but they’ll still be making it onto our screens

Former Sheffield United star Harry Maguire is one of the two big names from the Steel City that’s made it into the line-up of a well-renowned football show as excitement turns to the FIFA World Cup in North America.

Maguire, who will consider himself unfortunate not to have made it into Thomas Tuchel’s final 26-man squad, said he was ‘shocked and gutted’ not to have made the group in an emotional interview just 24 hours before the final Three Lions squad.

He’s failed to make it into the team despite an excellent track record at international level historically. Maguire’s also experienced a strong campaign at club level, having helped spearhead Manchester United’s resurgence in the second half of the campaign - starting the majority of games under Michael Carrick after his midseason appointment.

However, as it’s often said in life, when one door closes another one opens. And for Maguire that opportunity will be punditry as he’s confirmed in the line-up for the The Rest Is Football 2026 World Cup edition.

The popular football programme, first published in August 2023, featured former England stars Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. It started out as a podcast on Spotify and YouTube but is now preparing to make its grand arrival on Netflix on Wednesday 10 June.

Maguire is set to be one of the pundits offering behind-the-scenes access into life on international duty alongside other familiar faces like Frank Lampard and Patrick Vieira along with One Direction’s Niall Horan and comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

They’ll also be insight from another popular former player with insight into winning an international trophy with England. That comes in the form of Millie Bright, who recently announced her decision to retire from football after a sensational career for club and country which saw her win a combined total of 19 trophies - including the European Championship on home soil in 2022.

Speaking ahead of the show, The Rest Is Football co-host and former England skipper Shearer said: “The World Cup is as big as it gets, and bringing The Rest Is Football to Netflix during the tournament is a brilliant opportunity to get stuck into the football properly. There’ll be huge performances, big decisions, pressure moments and plenty for supporters to debate - exactly what we love talking about.”

The Rest Is Football co-host Micah Richards, a two-time Premier League winner, added: “I’m absolutely buzzing for this. World Cup, Netflix, New York and The Rest Is Football on a massive stage - what more could you want? It’s going to have everything people love about the show: proper analysis, big opinions, dressing-room stories and, knowing us, plenty of laughs as well.”
