Young and old collide in South Yorkshire title fights

Experienced boxers hit the ring for Magna Centre event

Boxing is normally a young person's sport, says veteran coach and former champion Jason Cunningham.

Yet he believes a title fight between two seasoned campaigners in their mid 30s on Saturday, will be a spectacle well worth watching.

Connan Murray, aged 34, from Cusworth, faces Wakefield southpaw Dom Hunt, 35, at Rotherham's Magna Centre, with the Central Area super welterweight belt on the line.

Also on the bill is Sheffield-trained former world champion Nicola Hopewell, 34.

It's a sharp contrast with another title fight on the evening, which features 18-year-old Rianna Doforo, managed by Sheffield's Ryan Rhodes.

She is aiming to take home the Central Area super featherweight strap.

Cunningham, who trains Murray, says Saturday's contest will be a significant test for his man.

"The Central Area championship is still an important one, it's a proper, recognised title and the first rung on the ladder," he says.

"Boxing might be a young man's game, but this has the makings of a great fight."

Hunt has been a professional for nearly eight years and has beaten the likes of Jimmy Joe Flint andf earlier this year went ten rounds with Eithan James, who is now a British title contender.

That places Murray as the underdog. He has only fought professionally for four years and his opponents haven't been of the same calibre at Hunt's.

"Maybe he is the underdog, but we are very confident going into this,," said Cunningham.

"Connan will be fresher than Dom, and always does well against southpaws."

He said both fighters will want to dominate in the centre of the ring, and the contest would be an absorbing one for the Magna audience, on the Ryan Rhodes/Jamie Sheldon bill.

Another fighter to look out for is Sheffield's Samantha Lightfoot. If she wins, she will likely get a Central Area fight against Doncaster's Billy Jarmolinski later on this year.
