The pair slugged it out over 12 brutal rounds last Saturday, Simpson winning the contest with a unanimous decision.

The Barnsley fighter and manager Kevin Maree left the Leeds Arena with the British and Commonwealth super middleweight belts that Williamson had stripped from him eight months prior.

Saturday's event made it 1-1 in the series. And that is where it will stay, says Maree.

In a no-nonsense post on social media, Maree wrote in capital letters: "CHAPTER CLOSED.

"Two warriors. One hell of a battle. Respect earned. Respect given. On to the next chapter."

That leaves Simpson free to chase the goal that promoter Ben Shalom hopes to deliver - an assault on a world title.

Maree, an important member of Simpson's inner circle, has also paid tribute to Rob McCracken, who took over training the fighter at Sheffield's EIS in January.

He told a press conference: "Hats off to Rob for the game plan - Callum's gone out there and followed it to a T.

"I couldn't be any prouder."

Darlington's Williamson was sporting after his defeat but some of his supporters weren't happy with the officiating at the bout.

Billington Boxing Academy said of the rematch: "Another good fight but frustrating how the referee let Simpson hold and walk Troy back to the ropes then lean on all night and not give a single warning."

McCracken's view, not surprisingly, was totally different on Simpson's ringcraft.

"I thought he boxed and performed really well, put some really good body shots together, walked Troy back at times."

He was pleased that Callum didn't remain stationary in front of Williamson as he had in their first fight when he was repeatedly caught by right hands.

*The next local fighters to climb between the ropes are Sheffield's Owen Durnan and Chesterfield's Amy Greatorex. They box in Wigan on Saturday.

After that, on August 22, Rotherham/Doncaster fighter Ellie Hellewell competes for the vacant Commonwealth Boxing Council featherweight title against Tiah Mai Ayton on a Matchroom bill at York Hall, Bethnal Green.
