Abbeydale Gold Club celebrate an incredible year of success
2026 has proved to be one of the standout years in the history of Abbeydale Golf Club
During its illustrious past, which stretches back 131 years, it is difficult to remember another season that has contained as many golfing highlights for Abbeydale Gold Club as 2026.

Back in June, Abbeydale hosted its first national event when The English Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship was held over three days at the Twentywell Lane Club in Sheffield. Some of the best 50 years of age and over golfers from around the world took part in this 54-hole championship which was won by the defending champion and current world number one Nadene Gole from the Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia, who triumphed by just one shot .

Nadene is a multiple winner of major Senior Ladies’ Championships, including the 2024 US Senior Amateur and British Senior Amateur Championships.
Compliments galore were heaped upon the terrific condition of the Abbeydale course, and the competitors praised the wonderful welcome that they received from the club members.
In August, Abbeydale’s elite golfer, Rebecca Hembrough, had the great honour of captaining the under-16 GB & Ireland Girl’s Team in their match against the Continent of Europe for the annual Junior Vagliano Trophy, with the event being held over two days at the Island Club in Dublin. It was a nail-biting finish to this competition with the GB & Ireland side suffering a very narrow 9.5 to 8.5 points defeat in a keenly contested match.
On the 27th September, Abbeydale member Calum Davies fought his way through to the latter stages of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs’ Junior Match Play Championship at Lindrick Golf Club where he had a resounding win in the morning semi-finals over his Hillsborough GC opponent by 8 & 6.

In the afternoon final, Calum maintained his good form and ran out as Sheffield Union Champion by a score of 3 & 1, with his name now being engraved on the same trophy that has previously been won by superstar golf professional Matthew Fitzpatrick and Jack Whaley from Rotherham GC who is the reigning US Amateur Champion.
If all of this success in a single season was not enough, in October, Abbeydale’s Head Teaching Professional Gareth Davies was once again selected to represent GB & Ireland in the PGA Cup event against the USA at the K Club outside Dublin, this being the club professional’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup.
Gareth won three of the five games that he was selected to play in, and his valuable contribution helped his side to a convincing 16.5 to 9.5 points win against their American rivals, the first win by the home team since 2017.
